John Edward Etherton, 82, of Murphysboro, passed away at 10:03 a.m. on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at his home in Murphysboro.

Mr. Etherton was born August 28, 1933 in Murphysboro, a son to the late Elmer L. and Ceciel E. (Gunn) Etherton. He served in the United States Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. Mr. Etherton was employed as an aircraft mechanic for commercial airlines. He retired from American Airlines in 1994 and he and Mrs. Etherton purchased a hobby ranch and raised Emu for ten years. He was an avid animal lover and had a special ability to work with all kinds of animals. It’s said he once taught a chicken to ride on a horse.

Mr. Etherton was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and served as an Elder and an usher for several years.

Survivors include his wife, Annette of Murphysboro; two daughters, Cynthia L. (David) Boschert of St. Charles, Mo. and Michelle (Steve) Reames of Ava; two sons, John (Maggie) Etherton Jr. of St. Peters, Mo. and Mike (Pam) Davis of Murphysboro; nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, one brother, Pat (Jan) Etherton; twin sisters, Kathryn Etherton and Carolyn (Bill) Bailey; two nephews and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, December 19, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. noon at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Murphysboro with Pastor Josemon Hoem officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the church. Interment will follow at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park near Murphysboro. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside by American Legion Post 127.

Memorials are encouraged and may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church or Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home or the church.
