Description:

JOHN WESLEY GRAMMER Born Dec. 25, 1825; Died January 20, 1906

Captain J. W. GRAMMER died at his home on South Poplar street in this city at 2 a.m. today after an illness and general breaking down which covered a period of many months.

On Monday he suffered a stroke of paralysis, his entire right side being affected, since which time his death has been expected almost hourly. To him death must have been a welcome release from his afflictions, having been for a member of years almost totally blind. Until a very few years ago he had enjoyed excellent health and his was a familiar figure to nearly every resident of this city.

His recent decline has been hastened, no doubt, by the accident which befell his wife, his faithful associate for more than sixty years. In her fall she sustained very severe injuries from which she still suffers greatly.

John Wesley GRAMMER was born in Alabama, December 25, 1825, and was 80 years and 25 days old at his death. He was the oldest of the eight children of Dr. Joel GRAMMER, but two of these now surviving: Mrs. Matt WRIGHT, of Alto Pass, and Mrs. Louisa CORGAN, of Dallas Texas.

The GRAMMER family moved to Union County, Illinois when the subject of this sketch was ten years old, locating near what is called the "Grammer Hill," in the northern part of the county.

In 1842 Mr. GRAMMER was married to Tabitha Jane HAGLER, at Jackson, Mo., the wife who now survives him. Their married life covers a period of sixty-three years – probably longer than that of any couple in this vicinity.

Since coming to Union County in 1835, deceased has lived practically all his life in Southern Illinois, for many years until about 1872, near Jonesboro, Union County, afterwards moving to Pomona township, this county, where he resided for fourteen years. About 1886 the GRAMMER family removed to Carbondale which has since been their home.

Thirteen children were born to Capt. GRAMMER and wife, seven of whom are now living; five sons and two daughters. They are John GRAMMER, Carbondale; Allen GRAMMER, Pomona; Curtis GRAMMER, Murphysboro township; Arthur GRAMMER, Carbondale; Lemma GRAMMER, Pomona township; Mrs. Louisa LIPE, Pomona; Mrs. Catherine CROWELL, Carbondale.

From the year 1890 to 1894 Capt. GRAMMER was police magistrate of the city of Carbondale. For a number of years, also, he was a justice of the peace in Pomona township.

Deceased was a veteran of the Civil War where he served as captain of Co. B. 81st Illinois Volunteers. He was also a veteran of the war with Mexico and until his death one of the very few survivors in this section. He was a member of John W. Lawrence Post G.A.R. of this city.

The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the GRAMMER residence, South Poplar Street, Rev. C. F. J. Tate officiating. Interment in Oakland Cemetery.
