I received E-mail in August 2007 from Jesse containing information on the Charles Etherton branch of the family tree
I wanted to share research on Charles Etherton s/o Wm Carroll and Sarah Frances Whitlow Etherton born Feb 2, 1875 and died Nov 15, 1905, buried at Snider Hill cem Carbondale, Jackson, Il. Charles married Lula Ella Bush d/o Wm Elijah Bush and Martha Jane Watson (niece of Louisa Watson Etherton) on June 4, 1894 in Williamson Co Il Charles 21 and Lula 18 by L. D. Hartwell County Judge. Witnesses: Hiram Etherton and James A. Felts. When Charles and Lula were first married they lived in Makanda and about 1901 moved east of Carbondale. I was told Charles had a creeping paralysis and worked his land by pulling himself along the ground. He died Nov 15, 1905. Charles and Lula had a daughter, Mamie Francis Etherton born Dec 1, 1897. Mamie married Earl Hendrick about 1915 in Carbondale. Earl was born Feb 3, 1894 in Carbondale and died in 1988. Mamie Etherton Hendrick died at Carbondale Feb 26, 1932 at the age of 34. She left two children Charles Earl age 9 and Ernestine Nerine age 7, her mother Mrs. Ernest Bain and half brother Roy Bain. Member of Drury Christian Church. Buried at Oakland Cem Carbondale, Il Cause of death: Chronic Deforming Arthritis 5 years. (Obit and Death Cert.) Charles Earl Hendrick born Jan 8, 1923 in Carbondale, Il, married Margaret Unknown. Worked as coal miner. Lived 1 mile SE of Carbondale. Charles died Oct 3, 1950 at the age of 27. Cause of death: Multiple Sclerosis Burial Oakland Cem Carbondale, Il (Obit and Death Cert) Ernestine Nerine Hendrick born Dec 17, 1924 in Carbondale, Il, married Ivan Vernall Webb born March 5, 1918 s/o Elmer Jefferson Webb and Maude Ellen Watson (cousin of Ernestine's grandmother Martha Jane Watson Bush) 1941 in Missouri. Ivan retired from General Motors in Flint, Michigan in 1967, and died at his inlaws home in Carbondale on Jan 7, 1974 buried at Oakland Cem Carbondale, Il. Ernestine remarried John Ellis Drews first on April 30, 1974 in Clark Co Nevada Book 436 Int# 738405, then married John a second time on April 8, 1982 in Osceloa Co Flordia Vol. 5107 Cert 030888, then married John a third time on July 14, 1983 in Clark Co Nevada, they stated they were residents of Flordia. Ernestine died Dec 24, 1988 in Carbondale, Il buried at Oakland Cem Carbondale,Il. John Drews died July 22, 1989 in Osceola Co Flordia according to Flordia Death Index. Not sure they were still married at the time of Ernestine's death. (Obit from Jackson Co Il Hist Society) Has any others in the Etherton families had any type of paralysis? It seemed to be strong in Charles Etherton's family! GROVER ETHERTON s/o Wm Carroll and Louisa Watson Etherton (Louisa was sister to my 3 great grandfather James Watson) My dad and uncle knew Grover well. (Obit) Grover Etherton died Sept 21, 1952 in Dongola at the home of his daughter, Ople Llosaeco. Born May 4, 1885. Moved to Dongola from Crab Orchard about 14 years ago. Survivors: wife, Ella; Two sons, Wayne, Peoria and Earl of Dongola; four daughters, Mrs Ople Losaeco, Dongola, Mrs. Mary Fan, Dongola, Mrs. Ruby Owens, Detroit, Michigan, and Mrs. Florence Casmer of Dearborn, Michigan. Three sisters, Mrs. Emma Damron, Carterville (Oscar R. Damron), Mrs. Lilly Miller, Makanda (Hugh Miller), Mrs. Anna Watson of Carbondale(Wm Lafyette Watson, grandson of Louisa Watson Etherton's brother Jesse Watson.) One brother, Henry Etherton,(his wife was Leatha Frances Clark, d/o James Alexander Clark and Elizabeth Watson, sister to Louisa Watson Etherton) Grover had another sister Adda Leona (Addie) Etherton who married Charles Garner. Addie died in 1929 but I have not found her death cert yet. Charles Garner was listed as an inmate in the Anna State Hospital in 1920 and 1930 census. Charles died in 1944. Their children were: Vern E. Garner born May 6, 1908 in Makanda, Il died about Dec 30, 1976 in Carbondale, Il. He married Edith Davidson, who died Aug 6, 1974. Survivors, daughter Nadine Phillips of Zeigler, son Carroll E. of Hurst and three grandchildren. Two brothers Kenneth and Blanchford. Buried in Blairsville Cem (obit) Kenneth Garner born Dec 2, 1919 and died May 13, 1986 buried in Blairsville Cem Survivors are brother Blanchford Garner and niece, Nadine Phillips of Ziegler (Jackson Co Il Hist Soc.
