Ernst "Ernie" Nielsen, 86, of Murphysboro, Illinois, passed away at 11:56 a.m. Sunday, February 12, 2012, at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale, Illinois.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, February 15, 2012, at Pettett Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Hicks officiating and entombment at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park with military services conducted by the American Legion Post # 127, V.F.W. Post # 7190 and 2605, and the Jackson County D.A.V. Chapter # 69. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday until 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Samaritan's Purse, 800 Bamboo Road, Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607.

Ernst was born on October 28, 1925, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Soren Nielsen and Viola (Hansen) Nielsen.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Nielsen had retired from the Jackson County Health Department as an Sanitarian Engineer.

He attended Murdale Baptist Church in Carbondale, Illinois.

Ernie enjoyed gardening, oil painting, wood carving, and he like to grow cactus.

He married Imogene Sumner on October 13, 1951, in St. Louis, Missouri, and she survives.

Other survivors include three daughters and son in laws Mary Lynn and Larry Powell, Sue and Eric Vana, and Becky and Joe Swafford, all of Murphysboro; seven grandchildren Stefani Swiatkowski, Quinn Vana and his wife JoAnn Vana, Jacob Reiman, Isaac Vana, Bethany Reiman, Niel Vana, and Samuel Powell; and one niece Janet Nielsen of St. Louis, MO.

He was preceded in death by one daughter Norma Ruth Nielsen, one granddaughter Ericka Swiatkowski, one brother, one sister, and his parents.
