MURPHYSBORO -- Allene "Babe" L. Etherton, 97, passed away at 6:45 p.m. Friday, April 1, 2011, at her residence in Murphysboro.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 4 in Pettett Funeral Home with the Revs. Larry Gilbert and Earl Renshaw officiating. Burial will be in Tower Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from to 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.
Allene was born Sept. 17, 1913, in Murphysboro to John Sauerhage and Hilda (Harrison) Sauerhage.
She married Elmer C. " E.C." Etherton on June 25, 1932, in Murphysboro, and he preceded her in death April 5, 1984.
Babe and her husband owned Elmer C. Etherton Confections for more than 40 years.
Mrs. Etherton was a lifelong member of United Methodist Church in Murphysboro. She served on the board of directors at First Bank and Trust Company in Murphysboro and was a member of Jackson County Nursing Home Auxiliary, Jackson County Home Extension and St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary.
"Babe" is survived by one nephew, Jim Wright of Richmond, Ky., and several great-nieces and nephews; her caregivers, Cindy Pierce and Sheila Ahten, both of Murphysboro, Kim Grove of West Frankfort, Barb Peterson of Herrin, Pam Foster and Annie Fann, both of Murphysboro and Sheila Buchanan of Carbondale; one daughter-in-law, Diane Freebern; three grandchildren, Jason, Darwin and Jennifer Freebern; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Jack Freebern and William Carroll Etherton; one brother; two sisters; one niece, Mary Rose Bush; and one nephew, John Sauerhage.
