CARBONDALE -- Helen Lucine Morlock Etherton, 94, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 10, 2015, in Carolina Village Medical Center after a long period of declining health.
A native of Illinois, she was a daughter of the late James R. and Elizabeth (King) Morlock. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Joseph Morlock, and sister, Mary Elizabeth Morlock Fink.
She was a graduate of Urbana High School and received her Bachelor of Science degree in home economics from the University of Illinois. She was a long time member of the university's Chi Omega Sorority. She married William C. Etherton in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on Dec. 19, 1941. Following a three-day honeymoon, William, who was enlisted with the U.S. Army Air Forces during WW II, was shipped overseas to serve in North Africa and Italy for the next 3 ½ years. Despite the hardship of this lengthy separation, their marriage endured for the next 73 years. They spent the last 30 years as residents of Henderson County, North Carolina.
Mrs. Etherton enjoyed volunteer work with Pardee Hospital Auxiliary and received a 3,000 hour pin for service. She was also one of Pardee Hospital's “Women of Hope” having been a two time cancer survivor. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and an active member of the Catholic Women's Guild.
Mrs. Etherton is survived by her husband, William C. Etherton; two sons, James W. Etherton and his wife Cindy of Swansea and Jud Etherton and his wife Gayle of Hendersonville, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Julie Etherton Parker and her husband Jeff of Salisbury, North Carolina, Dottie Etherton Morgan, North Carolina, and her husband Chad of Peoria, Arizona, Myra Etherton McDonough and her husband Kip of Hickory, North Carolina, and James Justin Etherton of Belleville; six great-grandchildren, Sarah and Brian Parker, Will, Landon and Grace Morgan and Harrison McDonough.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 11, 2015, in Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale, with Father Robert Flannery officiating.
A mass of the resurrection was celebrated Friday, March 13, at the Immaculate Conception Church. The Reverend Praveen Boyapati officiated.
The family would like to thank the staff at Carolina Village Medical Center and Care Center and Four Seasons Hospice for their care and help during this period.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pardee Hospital Foundation (Women of Hope), 800 N. Justice St. Hendersonville, NC 28791, or to Four Seasons Compassion for Life, 571 S. Allen Rd. Flat Rock, NC 28731.
