William Henry Wakefield, the son of George and Mernervia Bell Wakefield, was born near Piano, Iowa, on July 8,1877. He departed this, life on March 14, 1957, at the age of 79 years, 8 months, and five days. He had been in failing health for several years. On May 7, 1910, he was united in marriage to Grace Stargell. Fifteen children were born to this union.
William spent his entire life in Iowa with the exception of three years in Missouri and one year in Mexico. At the time of his retirement he was a farmer. During his working years he had worked on the Milwaukee. Railroad, at coal mining, housemoving, and as a threshing machine operator and a teamster.
Surviving him are his wife and 15 children: Harold Wakefield of Exline, Iowa; Lena Rossona of Brooklyn, N. Y.; Anna Margetich of Rock Island, Ill.; Irene Walker of Elko, Nev.; Marie Lawson of Promise City,la.; Sarah Mikels at home in Centerville; Alice Wakefield of Centerville; Woodrow Wakefield of Centerville; Ruth Benz of Centerville; Harry Wakefield of Colone, Ill.; Bobby Wakefield at home in Centerville; Everett Wakefield serving in the U. S. Army at Ft. Riley, Kans.; Ray Wakefield and Margaret Robinson of Los Angeles, Calif.; and Cleo Higgs of Mt. Vernon, Wash. He is also survived by two sisters, Hattie Brandsfield of Cedar Rapids, la. and Ella Johnson of Centerville, la., as well as 36 grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and a host of nephews and nieces.
Preceding him in death have been his parents, two sisters, Lydia and Sadie, two brothers, Jess and Ben, two daughters who died, in infancy, and a son, Ersel, killed in action in World War II.
Mr. Wakefield waswell known in the Piano and Mystic vicinity and will be remembered by his family as a kind and loving husband and father.
Mr. Wakefield was baptized by the U. B. church in Mystic.
