HEAD FILLED WITH BIRD SHOT.
George Wakefield Uses Shot Gun on W.S. Wailes - Old Feud Renewed Which Will Undoubtedly End in Shedding of More Blood.
Another chapter in the Wailes - Wakefield feud, of Johns township, took place on Monday morning in which W. S. Wailes was shot in the head and face with a load of shot by George Wakefield. On Monday forenoon George Wakefield came to town and gave himself up saying that he had shot Wailes and he supposed him to be dead. He was placed in jail and information was filed against him for assault with intent to do great bodily injury. The case came up before Esquire Henderson in the afternoon and while it was pending Buck Wakefield, brother of the prisoner, came in town and-wanted a warrant issued for W . S. Wailes, on the same charge. That he was not much hurt and was out with a gun looking for George Wakefield. Esquire Henderson, who has had considerable to do with this affair in the past, refused to have anything more to do with it, and refused to issue a warrant for Wailes or further prosecute Wakefield and so turned him loose. He was still in Centerville last night and at this writing that is the way the matter stands.
The Wakefield. account, of the shooting is about this: George Wakefield had been to the house ot Henry Crow on an errand and coming away from there between seven and eight o'clock, met W . S. Wailes coming down the road. Wakefield had a double barreled shot gun and Wailes a large revolver. He says Wailes drew his revolver and shot at him, when he jumped behind a pile of posts and returned the fire with his shot gun. The first shot missed altogether and the second struck Wailes in the head but the distance was so great that the shot did not penetrate the skull. This is the Wakefield account, and others who were within hearing say that there were three shots fired. Wailes went to Piano and had his wounds dressed and Wakefield came to Centerville and gave himself up.
It is high time that something was done about this matter before murder is committed. This affair has been going on for some years and in the meantime two houses have been burned belonging to the Wailes boys and about 70 tons of hay belonging to the father of these boys. There has been several fights and this is about the third shooting affair. All these things give the community a bad name and swell the court account which have to be paid by the tax payers.
