Freida Lorraine (Ellis) Smith, 70, of Murphysboro, west to be with the good lord at 8:10 p.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2010, in the home of her daughter, surrounded by her loving family and friends.
She was born on December 7, 1939, in Jackson County, to Dewey Ellis and Ina Bell (Basden) Ellis.
She was happily united in marriage to Melvin Ardell Smith on June 12, 1955, in Cornith, Mississippi. They shared over 54 years of wonderful marriage together and were blessed with raising seven wonderful children.
Freida loved bowling and was a team member for many years throughout this time she made many friends through the league.
She worked 22 years at Cablec Cable & Wire in DuQuoin, Illinois. One of her favorite hobbies was mushroom hunting.
She is survived by her husband Melvin Smith of Murphysboro; son and daughter in law, Danny and Jeanne Smith of Carbondale; son and daughter in law, Melvin Scott and Eva Smith of Ava; daughter and son in law, Teresa and Orville Rogers of Murphysboro; daughter and son in law Marsha and Mike Holt of Murphysboro; daughter, Connie Smith of Murphysboro; son and daughter in law Danny Jr. and Vicki Smith of Murphysboro; son and daughter in law Mike and Colette Smith of Murphysboro; twelve grandchildren Nathan Smith, Brittany Smith, Bethany (Smith) Townley and her husband Jeremy Townley, Jody Smith, Sarah Nadeau, Jennifer Nadeau, Michael Holt, II, Orville Wayne Rogers, William Rogers, Cory Smith, Cortney Lorraine (Smith) Bastien and her husband Patrick Bastien, and Heather Smith; seven great grandchildren Skyler Smith, Tyler Smith, Shelby McGlaughlin, Ayla Smith, Noah Townley, Caleb Townley, and Corabell Bastien; three brothers Robert (Bob) Ellis and his wife Joyce; Leonard Ellis and his wife Mary; Fred Ellis and his wife Doris; one sister Viola Fox and her husband William Fox; and other extended family and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents Dewey and Ina Bell Ellis, two sisters Beulah Clover and Lena Fruits, and one infant brother Freeman Ellis.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 27, 2010, at Pettett Funeral Home in Murphysboro with Rev. Gilbert Gee officiating and she will be laid to rest in her family owned cemetery near her home. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home
