Clifton E. "Gene" Basden, age 83, passed away Friday morning, February 5, 2016, on a cruise ship near Cozumel, Mexico.
Clifton, who was better known as Gene, was born on April 30, 1932, in Pomona, Illinois.
He had served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Gene had retired as a steelworker working from 1950 to 1985. He then moved to Murphysboro, where was a local entrepeneur. Mr. Basden was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church in Murphysboro.
He was an avid woodworker and he loved to mushroom hunt and fish. He loved his family and enjoyed going on trips with them. He had stated on this cruise, that he was "on his last hooray" with the Larry's Country Diner Cruise.
Gene married Roberta "Bert" James on July 1, 1950, in Murphysboro, and she preceded him in death on December 29, 2012.
He is survived by three children and their spouses Charles B. and Rose Basden of Murphysboro, Teresa Lynn and David Kohenskey of Granite City, and Brett Eugene and Gwen Basden of Murphysboro;
ten grandchildren Darlene Camren, Gene Basden, Laura Long, Christine Benway, Natasha Ridings, Haley Basden, Marissa Phillips, Stacey Shepherd, Christina Patterson and Felecia Pedigo;
twenty eight great grandchildren;
a special friend Carleen Reeder of Murphysboro, and his best buddy and faithful companion "Petri";
one brother and his wife John and Shirley Basden and one sister and her husband Norma and Dale Rains, all of Collinsville.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 13, 2016, at Trinity Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Raglin and Rev. John Jones and entombment at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park with military services conducted by the Paul Stout American Legion Post # 127. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 pm Friday and Saturday from 10 to 11 am at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Baptist Church.
