Janice (Stanford) Finnell was born in Honey Grove, TX on May 28, 1933 to Thomas and Arelia (Allen) Stanford. She passed away on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at Texoma Medical Center in Denison, TX.
She was a graduate of Honey Grove High School, Class of 1951. She continued her education at Mary-Hardin Baylor College in Belton, TX where she was on the debate team, and later earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Drama at East Texas State Teachers College. Janice married Billie Gene Finnell on January 22, 1959 in Ector, TX; he preceded her in death on August 21, 2000.
Janice was a very talented lady, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and teacher. She was an avid reader and loved to travel. She taught at Prosper Schools and retired from Ector Independent School district as an English teacher. During her teaching career she also taught Spanish, and Speech, she was a sponsor for the Ector Beta Club, as well as the yearbook sponsor, and the director of the Junior/Senior play.
She was also active in her community where she was a member of the Ector Beautification Committee, DAR, Ector Civic Club, and Eastern Star. Janice was a member of First Baptist Church of Bonham where she was a Sunday School Teacher, Bible Study Leader and member of the choir.
She is survived by children, Happy Kyle Finnell and wife Sharon, Richard Kevin Finnell and wife Lonita, John William Finnell and wife Cathy, Glenn Stanford Finnell and Jennifer Cornelius, Sam Lawrence Finnell and wife Nancy, and Summer Finnell Shaud and husband Daniel; grandchildren, Leslie Melton, Christina Peralta, Caitlin Morton, Case McNealy, Linus Shaud and Helen Shaud; numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; sister, Sandy Goggins, and sister-in-law, Tommie Stanford. Her parents also precede her in death.
Memorial services will be at 1:00pm on Monday, January 23, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Bonham. Her nephew, Bro. Rodney Stanford will officiate; interment will follow at Carson Cemetery in Ector, TX. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home Bonham, TX.
