Lawrence E. Etherton, 77, died at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 1997, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Etherton was a retired agent for the former Illinois Central Railroad. He was a World War II Army veteran, and served in the Asiatic and Pacific theaters where he received a Bronze Star.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, American Legion Post 127 and VFW Post 7190.
He was born Oct. 9, 1919, in Murphysboro, to Scott Etherton and Maude (Burton) Etherton. He married Virginia Arbeiter on May 5, 1940, in Mackson, Mo. She survives in Murphysboro.
Other survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Donna Etherton of Ghent, W. Va., and Bradley and Denise Etherton of Murphysboro; one daughter Carolyn Taylor of Carbondale; six grandchildren, Sheree Swanson and Tracy Taylor, both of Atlanta, Ga., Patrick White of Ghent, Craig Etherton of Murphysboro, and Lindsay Etherton and Lacey Etherton, both of Ghent; and one sister Marguerite Hardy of Murphysboro.
His parents, one brother and one sister preceded him in death.
