William D. Etherton, known to his friends and family as Bill, was born in Los Angeles, Calif., on May 22, 1928 to William O. Etherton and Lelia Colson Etherton. He lost his battle with cancer on March 26, 2013. Bill attended Dorsey High School and graduated in June 1946 at which time he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged two years later. Bill worked at several occupations throughout his life; sales, restaurant owner, and real estate and excelled in whatever he put his mind to. His real expertise was his memory of people, places and things. He truly was the pied piper of all things good in life and he loved to tell the stories of good times past. Bill, 84, was a California native and long time resident of Palm Desert and was an avid golfer and sports fan. It was when he retired to the Coachella Valley over 20 years ago, that tennis became his favorite pastime and he played it often and well. He loved passing his tennis knowledge to those who were smart enough to listen. The most important thing in Bill's life was his family; He is survived by daughters: Kristi Irwin (Parker, Ariz.), Gail Basse (Jack) (Palm Desert), Mindy Graham (San Diego) (Greg), and his longtime companion, Gillian Lee was a loving light in his life until the end. Bill also had three granddaughters: Monica Presswood (Anaheim), Lauren Graham (San Diego) and Katie Graham (Chico), with whom he shared his life secrets and he always enjoyed hearing their stories of adventure and just living life. Bill lived his life to the fullest and with his passing a hole in the heart of his family and friends will eventually be filled with the great memories of a man who made an impact on everyone he met. He will be missed every day, but he is in a better place. Bill was a member of the Sacred Heart Church and a Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, April 12 2013 at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sacred Heart Church in Palm Desert or Odyssey Hospice in Palm Desert.
