Lynn Stanford of Dallas, one of the ballet world's most treasured composers and accompanists, died Tuesday night at Baylor University Medical Center of a staph infection of the bloodstream.Memorial services are at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Elis Chapel at Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas.
The shaggy-haired Texan's improvisational music endeared him to most of dance's luminaries, including his friend Mikhail Baryshnikov, as well as Alexandra Danilova, Suzanne Farrell, Peter Martins and Rudolf Nureyev.
Stanford was born in Ector and grew up planning to be a concert pianist. He had said he was greatly influenced by the gospel music he played in the Baptist church in Ector.Stanford earned a degree in piano from the University of Texas at Austin, and he studied at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome.Many of Mr. Stanford's compositions have become standards for ballet school repertory across the country.
In 1980 he started a record label, Bodarc, in Dallas. He recorded 20 albums, which have sold more than 100,000 copies.
Stanford also received the Dance Masters of America's honorary award for lifetime achievement.
Survivors include his mother, Maggie Stanford of Waco; one sister, Carol Bucy of Nashville, Tenn.
