A. J. LIPE IS DEAD

Andrew J. Lipe aged 72 years, one of the pioneer residents of Saline county died at his home 325 East Prescott avenue at 12:45 Friday afternoon. The direct cause of his death is attributed to heart failure. He had been in comparatively good health and was hale and hearty for one of his years until recently when he suffered a violent attack of heart trouble.

Mr. Lipe was a member of the John A. Logan Post, G. A. R. and was one of the best known men in the city and county.

The time of the funeral will not be announced until word has been received from several of his sons and daughters who reside outside of Salina.

The arrangements for the funeral of Andrew Jackson Lipe, who died Friday noon of heart failure, have not been made. The funeral will be held as soon as Mrs. Herbert Hunt, a daughter from Los Angeles, Cal., arrives. She is now on the way to Salina.

Mr. Lipe has been somewhat sick for several weeks, but it was only within the past few days that his condition became serious. He is one of the most prominent old soldiers in Salina, being a member of John A. Logan post. Mr. Lipe enlisted in the Union army at the age of 21, in the year 1861. He served two enlistments, covering the entire period of the war. He was in Andersonville prison for two months, and when released was so sick he had to be carried out. He was a member of the Ninth Illinois infantry.

Mr. Lipe's birthplace was Murfreesboro [sic], Ill., and the date of his birth was April 13, 1840. He was married Oct. 12, 1862 to Miss Mary Jenkins. They came to Kansas in 1867 and located on the river, 12 miles northwest of Salina, where they lived until 5 years ago, when they moved to 325 East Prescott. There are eight children, all living, and six of them were at their father's bedside when he died. The children are Frank, of Guardville, Oregon; George of Kipp; Alonzo of Marydell; Andrew of Salina; Mrs. E. R. Hill of Culver, Mrs. R. T. Cane of Salina; Mrs. Herbert Hunt of Los Angeles and Miss Zoe Lipe of Salina.

Mr. Lipe leaves a widow, a sister, Mrs. Mary Brummitt, of Lindsborg, and a brother, George, of Burlington, Kan.
