J. Emmett Fisher, 88, a former Murphysboro school teacher, principal and school board member died May 15, 1976, in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

He was born in Makanda to William and Alice Fisher. He was married Oct. 16, 1909, in Murphysboro to Grace Hagler, who died July 15, 1973.

Mr. Fisher was a member of the United Methodist Church. He was a life member of Murphysboro Elks Lodge 572, and a life member of the Masonic Lodge 498 in Murphysboro.

Mr. Fisher was a school teacher and principal at Longfellow School beginning in the early 1920s and remained there until the early 1930s. He was a member of the Board of Education of the Murphysboro High School District 100 when the present Unit District 186 was formed in August 1957. He was elected one of the seven charter members of the board of Unit 186 on Aug. 31, 1957, and was the charman of the board. He served nine years as chairman before his retirement from the board in the late 1960s.

Mr. Fisher also operated a service station in Murphysboro, and, with his son Laverne, operated a restaurant in Carbondale.

Laverne and his daughter, Grace Ione, preceded him in death. He is survived by a grandson, Ed Fisher of Murphysboro.
