MURPHYSBORO - Michael Wayne Miles, 71, passed away at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, in Carbondale Rehab and Nursing Center.
He was born Nov. 20, 1942, in Murphysboro to Howard Wayne and Ida Evelyn (Grammer) Miles.
Mr. Miles had served in the Illinois National Guard during the early 1960s. He worked at J.T. Blankenship in Murphysboro, and then later worked for 37 years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Natural Resources, retiring in 2005 as an engineering technician.
Mike was a lifelong member of the Elks Lodge in Murphysboro, where he enjoyed cooking for the Christmas party and at Bleyer's Lake for the special needs children and adults. He also was a member of American Legion Post 127.
His friend, Dave Reeder, had a drag racing car that he helped work on, and he enjoyed going to drag races.
Mike married Shirley McCuen on June 28, 1969, in Murphysboro, and she survives.
Other survivors include two children, Steven Miles of Taylorville and Natalie Lutz and her husband, Rex Lutz, of Troy; three grandchildren, Nolan Lutz, Caden Lutz and Ryanne Lutz of Troy; uncle and aunt, who were like his parents, Joe and Ruth Grammer of Murphysboro; three cousins and their families, Debbie Melcher of Phoenix, and Chuck and Kim Grammer and John and Teresa Grammer, all of Murphysboro; brother-in-law and his wife, Robert "Bob" and Elizabeth McCuen of Culver, Ind.; five sisters-in-law and their husbands, Joyce and Mike Heininger of Murphysboro, Janet Alms of Round Rock, Texas, Marge and Dannie McFadden of De Soto, Donna and Larry Herring of Murphysboro and Delores McCuen of Carbondale; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be at noon Thursday, Dec. 19, in Pettett Funeral Home in Murphysboro with the Rev. Bruce Payne officiating. His body will be cremated, and burial will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Calvary Campus Church, Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc., Elks Crippled Children or the donor's choice.
