Evelyn Phyllis Grams was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 17, 1931, to Albert and Louise (Rettinger) Louton. She followed a call to mission work, particularly with children, in South Africa at the age of 19.
Phyllis married Eugene Edgar Grams in Potgietersrus, N. Transvaal, SA on March 20, 1952. They served as Assemblies of God missionaries in South Africa until 2008, having worked in evangelism, church planting, and ministerial training. Phyllis helped establish the Women's Missionary Council and Sunday School programs, and she and Eugene established the Cape College of Theology in South Africa.
She was known for a powerful ministry of prayer, her unwavering faith, love for people, and great humor.
Phyllis is survived by her husband, Eugene, her three sons, Darrell, Dennis, and Rollin, and six grandchildren, Victoria, Brandon, and Michael, and David, James, and Rachel.
She is preceded in death by her first child, Faith Dawn, who lived only a few hours, and her younger sister, Lois Joy. Phyllis is also survived by her brother, Edgar Louton, a missionary in South Africa.
In life, her favorite psalm was Ps. 121. She loved to sing throughout the day and in church services, often singing 'Harvest Time.' In death, we believe, 'as it is written: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him"' (1 Cor. 2.9). Her labors now complete and with a firm hope in the resurrection, Phyllis left this life in Springfield, Missouri and entered into this glorious inheritance on 2 July, 2014.
