Description:
STEPHEN ETHERTON
Stephen Etherton died at the home of his son J.D. Etherton in Bloomington last Saturday evening, after a protracted illness, caused by cancer.
The deceased was one of the earliest settlers in Franklin County having removed here from Missouri in the year 1871. When the Union was threatened with dissolution Mr. Etherton then a young man at once enlisted upon the side of the Union and served his country for upwards of three years when he was honorably discharged, his eyesight having almost failed him. At the time of his death Mr. Etherton lacked less than two months of being eighty years of age and since his eighteenth years has been united with the Methodist church.
Those remaining to morn his going before are Margaret Etherton the aged widow and six sons, all long since grown to manhood, the most of whom were at his bedside at the time of his death. The funeral was held at the M.E. Church, Rev. Gould preaching the sermon after which the G.A.R. took charge of the remains and conveyed them to the Franklin Cemetery where under the funeral ceremonies of the Grand Army Grandfather Etherton was laid to rest as a brave and honored soldier of the Republic. The funeral procession was joined at Franklin by the G.A.R. Post of that place and numerous friends of the deceased.
For the kindness and sympathy and last tokens of friendship shown by the people of Bloomington and vicinity and at Franklin the aged widow and the sons wish to extend to them their truest thanks and everlasting regards.
