Raymond "Ray" Phillip Etherton, 70, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Altus with the Rev. Harvey Friedel officiating and the Rev. Maurice Hibbard assisting. Interment will follow at Restlawn Cemetery under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home.

Etherton was born Aug. 24, 1930, to Phillip and Ethel (Graves) Etherton in Sidney, Neb. He graduated in 1949 from Sidney High School. He then joined the Air Force. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He obtained more than 5,000 total flight hours and 1,000 hours were combat flying. He became a load master instructor and had traveled all over the world during his military career.

He married Arbie Harms on Jan. 31, 1958, in Sidney, Neb. They came to Oklahoma in 1970 where he obtained his bachelor of science degree from Southern Illinois University. After retiring from the Air Force in 1975, as a tech sergeant, he then worked for the Oklahoma State Employment Security Commission as an interviewer. He was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Altus. He had been an adult Sunday school teacher and elder for many years.

He retired from the Employment Commission in 1992 and began volunteering for the hospital auxiliary and the Salvation Army. He was a third degree mason with the Altus Masonic Lodge and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4876. He enjoyed playing dominoes with the Teenagers, reading and spending time with his family and friends.

Etherton was preceded in death by both parents, his wife, two sisters and two brothers.

Survivors include: two sons, Andrew Todd Etherton and his wife Teri of Vernon, Texas and William Rae Etherton and wife Amanda of Tipton; a daughter, Margaret Ann Salisbury and husband Joe of Norman; a cousin, Anna Mae Berwick of Valley Center, Kan. and one nephew, two nieces, three granddaughters and many friends.
