MURPHYSBORO - Shirley Lou Grammer, 71, passed away at 10:56 a.m. Sunday, July 20, 2008, in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2008, in Pettett Funeral Home, with the Rev. Frank Voorhees officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois Inc.
Shirley was born July 27, 1936, in Granite City, to John and Ida (Moschenrose) Bardmess.
She had worked as an LPN at Holden Hospital in Carbondale until it closed.
It was at the hospital where she met Chester Grammer, the love of her life. She married Chester on Feb. 13, 1965, in East St. Louis, and he preceded her in death June 13, 2006.
Mrs. Grammer also worked in the pediatric wing at Syrest Nursing Home for several years. She finished her career working in other nursing homes in the Carbondale area.
Her own children and those she cared for always had a special place in her heart.
She was a cherished member of the Victory Christian Fellowship. She will be greatly missed by her church family.
Shirley is survived by three children, Duane Grammer and fianc?e, Cassie Kirkpatrick, of Murphysboro, Steve Grammer and wife, Valerie (Tolke), of Union, Mo., and Jerry and Patty (Dallas) Grammer of Murphysboro; 10 grandchildren, Lauren Lachelle Grammer, Lindsay Danielle Grammer, Gracealyn KayJean Grammer, Edward Allen Grammer, Kimberly Dawn Graziano and husband, Mark, Jerry Wayne "T-Joe" Grammer Jr. and wife, Caroline, Christy Lynn King and husband, Todd, Lisa Marie Shephard and husband, Ray, Dane Robert Grammer and James Bryon Grammer; one stepgrandson, Eric Estep and wife, Kelley; 15 great-grandchildren, Whitney Robins, Derek Schindler, Blake Schindler, Riley Schindler, Cody Wayne Grammer, Abigail Christine Grammer, Cleda May Grammer, Dalton Michael Grammer, Allen James Grammer, Beka Mook, Taryn Lee Averitt, Ceara Nichole King, Caleb Wayne Peterson, Brock William Peterson and Chloe Faye Peterson; one great-step-granddaughter, Josie Estep; one great-great-grandson, Ethan Robins; and one special friend and cousin, June VanPelt.
She was preceded in death by one son, Roger Lee Grammer; one granddaughter, Susan Lachelle Grammer; and her parents.
