Al Lawson, 61, died Saturday, September 7, 2013, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Iles-Westover Chapel with burial to follow at Masonic Cemetery.
Al was born July 27, 1952, in Centerville, Iowa to Hollis and Marie Ellen (Wakefield) Lawson. He attended school at Callahan Junior High and Tech High School in Des Moines. Al then enlisted in the US Army where he served in Germany. He attended the American Institute of Technology and upon graduation Al was employed by Copy Systems Inc. He was later reunited with Phyllis "Martha his first lady" Kimrey. Al later became self-employed selling nuts, hence the "Nut Man". He had a love for trains and was always tinkering with something to do with electronics which earned him the nickname "McAlver".
Al is survived by his wife Phyllis, his son Casper Lawson of Avalon, PA, sister, Sue (Lori Pointer) Whitlatch of Des Moines, step children, John (Julie) Kimrey of Indianola and Jeffrey (Jody) Kimrey of Johnston; 6 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Diane Lawson and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and step-father Mr. True Boyer, and his brothers Gene, Bill, Larry and Gerry Lawson.
