Mary Ellen Hicks, 90, of Pomona, Illinois, passed away at 12:10 a.m. Monday, January 6, 2014, at the Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County in Murphysboro, Illinois.

Mary Ellen was born on May 16, 1923, in Alto Pass, Illinois, to Willie "Bill" Theodore Baseden and Eunice Lavica (Sprouse) Baseden.

She was a homemaker. She made a lot of quilts, and liked to make plastic canvas crafts and to do puzzles. She enjoyed her family and friends company and she liked to look at all of their pictures. She loved to fish.

Mrs. Hicks was Baptist by faith and she would attend church when she was able to go.

She was known to all as "Granny", and that, according to her, she was forever 39.

Mary Ellen married Lonnie Jeremiah Hicks on June 10, 1940, in Jackson, Missouri, and he preceded her in death on April 22, 1967.

She is survived by five children all of Pomona, Virginia Hickam, Robert "Bob" Hicks, Cecil Hicks, Jack Hicks and his wife Karen Hicks, and Joe Hicks and his wife Melissa Hicks;

fourteen grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren;

two sisters Dot Schemonia of Pomona and Betty Weston of Caulfield, MO; and one brother Billy Lee Baseden of Murphysboro.

She was preceded in death by one daughter Louise "Toots" Nance, two grandchildren, one great great grandson, three brothers, four sisters, and her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 8, 2014, in Pettett Funeral Home with Rev. Geoff Bond officiating. Burial at Dutch Ridge Cemetery.
